On this week's video mini series with Dan Carbone of Virteom -- Matex Products owner, James Van Hala, sits down and answers your questions - like, How do Planetary Gears Work? (or on last month's post: what are planetary gears?)
To understand how planetary gears work, let's look at a blown up photo of one:
First, we'll talk about the central sun gear. The central sun gear is where the input of your motor will go to into (#2 - in photo above). These sun gears are responsible for driving the actual planets around it. That is all housed within a ring gear (#1).
We also want to point out the rollers (#3), which Matex gears were the originator of. Matex's patented design ensures the planets in the Matex planetary gears always share equal loads, resulting in 98% efficiency at a single reduction with minimal heat loss and noise.
The rollers are attached to output carrier plate (#5), and thats where the torque is then transferred.
We carry planetary gears in OD from 26 mm up to 200 mm. The graphic below is a breakdown of each portion of our product numbers for our planetary gears. The structure of the product numbers is derived from different measurements. The graphic below explains what each section means.
